Viola For Kids

The viola’s shape is similar to the violin. But it is slightly larger, and its four strings are thicker. It therefore creates a warmer, deeper sound. Violas usually play the harmony in an orchestra. They are also used as solo instruments in chamber music. Played the same way as the violin, the violist rests the instrument between their chin and shoulder. The left hand presses the strings, and the right hand moves the bow or plucks the strings.

Learn more about the Voila

The viola often plays the “inner voices” in string quartets and symphonic writing, and it is more likely than the first violin to play accompaniment parts. The viola occasionally plays a major, soloistic role in orchestral music. Examples include the symphonic poem, “Don Quixote”, by Richard Strauss, and the symphony/concerto, “Harold en Italie”, by Hector Berlioz. In the earlier part of the 20th century, more composers began to write for the viola, encouraged by the emergence of specialized soloists such as Lionel Tertis and William Primrose.
